Drawing Class for those starting out and those who want to expand their skills: Visual artist with 20 years teaching experience, Joan Mullen is offering two fall drawing classes in her home studio in Newton Corner. Under her guidance you will develop your drawing skills, your powers of observation and your ability to communicate visually, through sequential guided instruction. She has taught at the DeCordova Museum School, The Boston Museum of Fine Arts School, The Fuller Craft Museum and the Danforth Museum School. She is an Adjunct Professor at Bridgewater State College, where she has taught all levels of drawing and three dimensional design. Class size will be limited. Drawing Class #1 is on 8 Monday evenings 7:00-9:30, October 17th-December 8th (no class on 10-31st). Drawing Class #2 is on 8 Friday mornings 9:00 am – 11:30 am, October 21 -December 16th (no class on 11-25th) Cost for the 8 classes is $250.00 which includes all drawing supplies and a portfolio. Registration is now open for Newton Cub Scouts. There are 6 packs that meet in Newton (Newton Center, Newtonville, Waban & 3 in West Newton) for boys in grades 1-5. In Cub Scouts, boys do all sorts of great activities with friends like building and racing pinewood derby cars, camping, community service projects, and being part of a team. The Scouts’ annual October food drive, Scouting for Food, is overwhelmingly the largest contributor to the Newton Food Bank. You are invited to Newton South High School’s SouthStage’s First Annual Adult Spelling Bee, a celebratory kick-off to the 2011-12 theater season and the opening of the musical “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” Join other adults (and perhaps show off your spelling skills) at this fun event & fundraiser. Friday Sept. 30, 7-10 pm, at The Windsor Club,1601 Beacon Street. $20 per person. Wine and delicious nibbles included. All profits support SouthStage, Newton South’s Theatre Group. Celebrate Newton, Newton’s own holiday crafts fair, is around the corner! It’s running this year on Sunday December 4 at Newton South High School. Exhibitor applications are still being accepted. The fair is sponsored by Newton Community Education; proceeds will help us expand our program and grow our scholarship fund. Attendees–mark your calendars! We hope to see you all there.
Registration is now underway for Fall classes through Newton Community Education and we still have openings in the following classes for middle schoolers: Speech Club at South on Mondays (open to Brown and Oak Hill students), Fencing at Bigelow on Mondays, More Math Please at Brown on Tuesdays, Chess and Archery at Day on Tuesdays, Lego Robotics at South on Tuesdays or Fridays, Cartooning at South on Tuesdays, The Stockmarket Game at Oak Hill on Tuesdays, and Babysitting at North on Saturdays. All our classes are for kids from all schools. We have many family classes, such as Cooking Wizardry, Chocolate with a Twist, Family Robotics Clinic, Family Night under the Stars, and more. We also have Saturday sports options for kids ages 2 and up, and weekday afternoon sports options such as Basketball, Archery, and Sports Jam. You’ve completed your PTO leadership duties and you want to stay in the loop. Why not join the Newton PTO Council Board? PTO Council is the umbrella organization composed of all Newton Public School PTOs in the city. Its members are the current and past presidents of each PTO. Registration opens by Oct. 1st: Newton Community Education (NCE) is in partnership with the Newton Athletic Association (NAA), a non-profit volunteer-run organization manages and administers basketball leagues in Newton. Leagues are for players from the third grade through high school. The league is generally considered a boys league but girls are welcome to play. All players welcome regardless of ability or experience. An evaluation clinic is coming up in October to balance the teams. There are 10-12 games on Saturdays and Sundays. Practices one night each week. Program runs Mid-November through Mid-March. Fee: (scholarships available) $120 with discounts for additional players from one family.
