Latin American Fiesta, Sat. March 29

Doesn’t feel like Spring yet? Take a Dinner-Dance journey through Latin America, and feel like you are on a fabulous, exotic vacation!

On Saturday March 29th , from the 7 – 10pm, Newton Cultural Center at City Hall will host the second annual Latin American Fiesta. You can enjoy a very special ‘date night’ or a ’girls night out,’ eating delicious food catered by Merengue Boston and dancing to lively Latin music performed by Veronica Robles.

The ticket cost of just $35 includes a buffet dinner and a night of entertainment by Veronica Robles, a multitalented media star who sings, dances, produces and hosts television shows. She is sure to get everyone out of their chairs and dancing the night away to the songs and dances from Colombia, El Salvador, Mexico and Peru. A wine/beer cash bar is available.

Purchase tickets online. The event proceeds benefit the Newton Food Pantries.

This week is the Newton Youth Summit, March 26th

Comedian Kevin Breel — a 20-year-old activist working in the area of depression and mental health — will speak at Newton’s third annual Youth Summit, Wednesday, March 26th from 6:00 -9:00 pm at the Newton North auditorium.

The Summit is open to teens, parents, and other community members and will focus on youth/adult communications, difficult conversations, and the results of the first two Summits.  The Mayor’s Youth Summits are sponsored by the Newton Youth Commission, City of Newton Health and Human Services Department, and The Newton Partnership to focus on challenges and solutions facing Newton teens.

Steve Wilkins is Head of School at Carroll, a K/1 – 8 school in Lincoln, MA for children with language based learning difficulties, including dyslexia. With more than 35 years of experience in the field, Steve is passionate about children who learn differently and celebrates their strengths while striving to provide a creative, experiential, outcomes-based curriculum that educates the whole child. Steve and Carroll are actively engaged in important brain science research that is helping educators understand why and how children with dyslexia learn differently. Steve’s talk will lay out the best thinking about how children learn or don’t learn to read, what kinds of interventions are most effective, and cutting edge studies that piloting new curricula to address working memory and other associated learning issues. More than an educator, Steve is a champion for kids who learn differently and what they have to offer the world.

Ovations 2014 Gala

The Newton Cultural Alliance, host Ed Harding (WCVB) and awards presenter Congressman Joe Kennedy invite you to Ovations 2014 Gala. Ovations celebrates Newton’s arts, culture and community! This year’s honorees include Newton native and sculptor Nancy Schön, non-profit Historic Newton, and patron WS Development. The ceremony also includes a performance of Alice in Wonderland by the Boston Ballet School and New Philharmonia Orchestra plus a gallery powered by Newton Open Studios.

Newton Family Singers Presents….Loves Me Like A Rock

A Joyous Celebration of the Music of Paul Simon, to benefit the Asperger’s Association of New England, and the Autism Alliance of Metro West. Join the Newton Family Singers on April 13th for a program of the energizing and inspiring music of Paul Simon, from the classic hits of the 1970’s to his uplifting African rhythms.

Proceeds of the show will benefit two local autism organizations, AANE and the Autism Alliance, which are lifelines for individuals on the autism spectrum, and their families, offering community and connection, education and information, and celebration of diversity. Films and discussion about suicide prevention

More than Sad: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Movie & Presentation
April 1st, 6:30-8:30 pm

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is the nation’s leading organization bringing together people across communities and backgrounds to understand and prevent suicide, and to help heal the pain it causes. AFSP has developed an educational program to help community members and concerned adults learn more about teen suicide and how they can play a role in its prevention. Join a screening of More Than Sad: Suicide Prevention Education for Teachers and Other School Personnel followed by a presentation with a clinician on hand to answer questions. The program will take place at the Newton Free Library in Druker Auditorium. View two 25-minute films that are endorsed by the National Association of School Psychologists and are listed on the Best Practices Registry for Suicide Prevention. Participate in a discussion based on a manual that integrates the films into a comprehensive suicide prevention program. The program is open to the public.

NewtonSERVES Project Registration is Now Open

NewtonSERVES is now accepting Project Registrations for its annual Day of Service to be held this year on  April 27th.

Volunteer projects can be set up by Newton non-profits, Newton city departments, individuals, and groups of citizens interested in accomplishing specific tasks with the help of over 1,000 volunteers from the community. Projects can easily be registered online, by visiting www.newtoncommunitypride.org/NewtonSERVES-project.php .

Projects can be in the morning, afternoon or all-day on Sunday, April 27th during the Day of Service, or they can be set up individually on an alternate date during the City of Newton’s Volunteer Week, April 28th-May 4th. In addition to gaining access to volunteers to tackle specific tasks, project sites may be eligible to receive additional resources such as mulch, garbage and yard waste bags. Project sites also benefit from raised awareness within the community and all participants receive NewtonSERVES T-shirts and refreshments in honor of their volunteer service. New projects leaders are encouraged to sign up along with recurring projects and experienced leaders.
