Looking for student tutors

Aristotle Circle Peers has recently opened a branch in the Greater Boston Area and they are eager to start building a strong network of tutors! They are looking to recruit high achieving (minimum GPA of 3.7) students to tutor and mentor peers of all ages in K-12 subjects.

This is a fantastic opportunity for High School Students!  Tutors can augment their own academic skills, pick their hours, get paid a great rate, work as a positive role model for students whom they tutor, and build a great resume for college with tutoring others!  If interested please apply online at http://peers.aristotlecircle.com or if you have any questions please email Wendy Rush at wrush@aristotlecircle.com or call Wendy Rush at 617-283-4892.

Tutor available

A math and science tutor with a BS in Electrical engineering working on her masters in Biomedical Sciences has been tutoring high school and college students for more than 15 years.  Currently tutoring many students from Newton South, she knows the math and science curricula pretty well, and is available to tutor all levels of Math, Physics, Chemistry and Biology (including honors and AP).

The program is structured to tutor your kids online using an engaging, organized and interactive system including Skype, an online whiteboard and a Penpad, and she has had great success with it.

Offering a free session to try and see if your student is comfortable with it and if they like it (most of them love it) and found it helpful, the sessions will continue.

Please email fun.math.science.tutor@gmail.com to set up the introduction and free session. References are also available upon request.

Fostering Executive Function Skills

Does your child…complete his/her homework, but forget to turn it in?
…………………………seem overwhelmed when faced with a long term project?
…………………………have trouble managing his/her time or materials while performing home or school tasks?

Learn strategies to help your child to efficiently manage his/her own tasks, time, space, materials (while keeping everyone’s emotions in check!)

What is Executive Function? Executive Function skills are the core set of cognitive skills required for planning, completing, and evaluating the completion of tasks, as well as overseeing our communication exchanges. These skills include functions that control behavior; such as attention, motivation, and emotional self regulation, as well as functions that guide behavior; such as planning, organizing, monitoring, reasoning, problem solving and flexibility.

Sarah Ward, M.S., CCC/SLP has over 16 years of experience in diagnostic evaluations, treatment and case management of children, adolescents and adults with language learning disabilities, nonverbal learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, executive dysfunction, Asperger’s disorder and social pragmatics. Ms. Ward holds a faculty appointment at the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions where she provides instruction to graduate level students in the assessment and treatment of individuals with traumatic brain injury and other cognitive communication disorders.

Save the Date: Boys & Girls Club Annual Auction, Nov. 15

The John M. Barry Boys & Girls Club of Newton’s 18th Annual Auction will be Friday, November 15, at the Club, 675 Watertown Street.

Guests will bid on exciting items, indulge in flavorful cuisine, meet our promising youth and experience first-hand how Great Futures Start Here!

There will be a ton of Red Sox memorabilia and tickets at this year’s event. Own a piece of history from our World Series Champions and earn some more bragging rights! Here’s a sneak peak at just a few of the great items:

David Ortiz Autographed World Series ’04/ ’07 Commemorative: David Ortiz, who has contributed to all three of the Red Sox’ recent championships, was named the most valuable player of this year’s series. He hit two home runs, knocked in six runs, scored seven more, batted .688 and had a staggering .760 on-base percentage. This shadow Box includes a baseball autographed by David Ortiz, Sports Illustrated magazine and photograph of the legend himself.
Donors: Friends of the Club

Autographed Shane Victorino Baseball: This is your chance to own a baseball signed by Red Sox right fielder, Shane Victorino! Returning to the lineup, he provided the key hit that essentially closed out the World Series and brought the championship home for the first time since 1918!
Donor: Boston Red Sox Foundation

Daniel Nava Autographed Baseball Bat: This bat has seen much better days – unlike the one in Game 5! Nava is only the fourth player in Major League Baseball history to hit a grand slam in his first major league at bat, and the second to do it on the first pitch.
Donors: Friends of the Club

Root for the Home Team!: Cheer on the Red Sox with these four tickets to see them play the NY Yankees in 2014. These are Infield Grandstand seats: Section 23, Row 03, Seats 1-4. Donor to determine game date.
Donor: A Friend of the Club

This is a truly exciting year (not just because the Red Sox won the World Series!), but this is a first in the Club’s history on Watertown Street to be hosting the event at the Club. Information and tickets available online at the Boys & Girls Club website.

“How to Be a Woman”: Parenting Our Daughters Through Adolescence

“How to Be a Woman”: Parenting Our Daughters Through Adolescence  is a peer-led discussion, support and activist group for Newton mothers of tween/teen daughters who are interested in figuring out how to best empower, support and protect our girls.

Goals of the group include:

  • To get current information and share our own experiences on various topics relevant to raising teen girls today (e.g. body image, media images, mental health, dating, sexism and harassment).
  • To be a safe place for moms to share questions and concerns about their daughters or the local teen community.
  • To develop an action plan to address each topic directly and to share our insights with others.
  • To be a starting point for positive social change – hopefully, with a sense of humor!

Kick-off meeting:  November 7th,  7:30-9:00 pm at Samadhi, 796 Beacon St, Newton Center (near B Street restaurant).  For more information or to RSVP, please contact: Kim Gallaugher at momofiggy@hotmail.com  or 617-558-0092.
