Great Winter Programs

Newton Parks and Recreation has a lot of great winter programs for children and adults. Check out the Newton Parks and Rec website at http://www.newtonma.gov/gov/parks
for information about our upcoming winter programs for children and adults. Some programs include:

December Vacation Programs
– at the Lower Falls Community Center December 29th, 30th, 31st and January 2nd for children in grades K – 6. Participate in sports, arts and crafts, inside games, and more. Each day features a fun special event. 8:30 am – 3:30 pm with extended day options.

– Thundercat Sports December 26th, 29th, 30th and 31st for children ages 6 – 12. Play a variety of sports including basketball, floor hockey, soccer, dodgeball and more. 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.

– family movie day at the West Newton Cinema December 29th and 30th. Enjoy a movie, popcorn and drink all for one low price. Tickets are sold at the West Newton Cinema starting at 10:00 am with the movies starting at 11:00 am.

Newton South Recreation Complex
– located at the Newton South High School, this Recreation Complex offers a variety of activities for youth and adults on Sundays including tennis, badminton, sewing classes, engineering with lego, fencing, thundercat sports, archery, workout facilities, and more.

Ski and Snowboard Program at Nashoba Valley
– For grades 5 – 12. Learn to ski or snowboard with lessons at Nashoba Valley Ski area. Already know how to ski or snowboard? Join us for the lift ticket only option. Transportation to Nashoba Valley is provided from Newton. This program runs on Fridays from 5:45 pm – 10:15 pm.

Camp Fair
– See what Newton Parks and Recreation and Newton Public Schools have to offer your child in Newton for the summer of 2015. 12:00 – 4:00 pm at the Newton North High School in the cafeteria.

For 50 years Newton Schools Foundation has supported the Newton Public Schools by providing private funding for innovative and challenging programs district-wide.

This year NSF is making a difference for Newton students through its Investing In Innovation fundraising campaign. Funds raised through the campaign are helping to ensure that NPS maintains and continues to provide pioneering programs for students and offers faculty and staff first-rate professional learning opportunities. Without these funds, NPS would be unable to expand many offerings district-wide or include students at all grade levels.

Since the campaign’s 2013 launch, Newton Schools Foundation has given the Newton Public Schools $170,000 to fund creative, dynamic, effective and up-to-date learning experiences for Newton’s diverse student population, reaching all levels of the school system – elementary, middle and high school – in areas that include:

• STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)
• Sustainability
• Literacy and History
• Closing the Achievement Gap

NSF’s goal is to raise $500,000 over the next three years in order to make the greatest impact on Newton’s 12,000 students.

NAA Basketball

The NAA has extended registration for 3rd Graders (C League) and continues to take registrations for its Senior (10th-12th Gr.) League. Visit naabasketball.org to register.

The registration deadline has passed for Grades 4-9. Limited spaces may be available. Call 617-559-6999 to inquire. The NAA is generally considered a boys league, but girls are welcome. All players are welcome regardless of ability or experience. Visit naabasketball.org for more information.

Kumon Math and Reading Center

The Kumon Math and Reading Center of Newton announces a new location: 56 Winchester St. The Center offers supplementary math and reading programs from Pre-K to 12th grade. To celebrate the move, they are offering a $25 donation to the Newton school of your choice untill the end of 2014. Just mention this offer and enroll during our free testing/orientation.

Winston Chiong, Ph.D. and Jane Chiong, Ed.D., the parents of four children who graduated from Newton Schools, have over 23 years experience running a Kumon center in Newton.  Additionally, Winston was a full professor of Economics and Jane taught Special Education, is a School Psychologist and published author. She is now writing her second book on Math Culture in America.

Celebrate Newton Craft Fair

Come to Celebrate Newton, the holiday craft fair sponsored by Newton Community Education. More than 50 local artisans will be selling hand-crafted jewelry, fabric arts, photography, soaps, culinary treats, glass work, tote bags, and more. Local musicians and choral groups will perform throughout the day, providing a lovely backdrop while you shop. There will even be a kids craft table and food available for purchase, so bring the kids and make a day of it.

Shop locally this holiday season and buy one-of-a-kind gifts for friends and family at Celebrate Newton. Net proceeds from the fair support NCE’s scholarship fund – admission $3 (kids under 12 are free).

Holiday Lighting Ceremony

Join in a spirited sing-along of holiday favorites with the award-winning Stacey Peasley Band. Beloved by audiences young and old, the band’s joyful style is sure to get the whole family singing along.

Then, join Mayor Setti Warren as he flips the switch that turns the City Hall grounds into a winter wonderland of twinkling lights. Admission is free. Light refreshments. Please bring a non-perishable item for the Newton Food Pantries. www.newtoncommunityrpride.org for more information.

Holiday Craft Show

It happens every holiday season…“What can I get for Aunt Sarah? My next-door neighbor’s baby? My boss?” With 50 artisans displaying their one-of-a-kind treasures, you are sure to find something for the most discerning person on your shopping list at the Newton City Hall Holiday Craft Show. Admission is Free!

As you wander the many hallways and the beautiful auditorium of Newton City Hall, stall upon stall of jewelry, hats and scarves, pottery, cards, handcrafted pens, baby clothes, glass works, paintings, purses, linens, small furniture and so much more will help you solve your gift giving challenge this year. Be sure to pick up a map when you arrive as the booths are tucked into every nook and cranny of the building and you don’t want to miss any! With ample free parking on the streets around City Hall; both east and west entrances will be open. Please bring a non-perishable food item for the Newton Food Pantries.
