Donate to NSF to Support ALL Newton Schools

Global study. Computer coding. Vibrant writing. Middle school engineering. Social/emotional learning. These are among the many varied and exciting initiatives Newton Schools Foundation (NSF) supports in the Newton Public Schools. And they do it thanks to the generosity of Newton community members like you.

For five decades NSF has provided funding for educational efforts that are hard to address in the school department’s operating budget. As the holidays approach, please donate to NSF so our schools can continue to best serve our kids. DONATE HERE

• Dynamic new curricula for all students.
• Teacher training for Newton educators on effective, up-to-date teaching practices.
• Achievement gap programs and scholarships for low-income and minority students.

Newton Mothers’ Forum Mothers’ Night Out!

Newton Mothers’ Forum is thrilled to announce the Keynote Speaker for the evening will be Dr. Jean Kilbourne, Author/Speaker/Filmmaker. Dr. Kilbourne is an internationally recognized expert on addictions, gender issues, and the media. She has been described as “a superstar lecturer” by The Boston Globe and has spoken at about half of all the colleges and universities in the U.S. and many conferences. Her first film, “Killing Us Softly: Advertising’s Image of Women” is among the most popular educational films of all time and is the topic of her presentation for NMF. She is also a well-known author, with titles such as “So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids” and “Can’t Buy My Love: How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Feel.” In recognition of her important work, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in October. She is also a Newton mom. You do not want to miss this event!

The Community Spotlight Speaker will be from The Second Step, a local nonprofit that helps survivors of domestic violence. Please remember that if you have signed up to donate a holiday gift to this organization, bring it with you to the meeting. You can also bring Star Market stickers for flatware to donate as well.

The food for the evening will be catered by New England Soup Factory with comfort food that is good for you. Vegetarian and gluten-free options will be available.

Community Messiah Sing

Join us to sing the Christmas section of Handel’s Messiah, and the Hallelujah Chorus! With Jeffrey Mills on the organ, Conductor Kyrah Rodriguez, plenty of scores and first-rate soloists – all that’s needed is a chorus of joyous voices!

So come and sing. All voices and listeners are welcome!

Holiday Pop-Up Shop at Spencer Street Arts

Newton parent organized 3-day Holiday Pop Up Shop at L’Aroma Cafe. There will be a group of 6 artists selling handmade goods (pottery, jewelry, glass, textiles, photography and eco-friendly goods).

Please help spread the word for some fun shopping right here in Newton this holiday season. This is the same weekend as West Newton’s Arts Stroll and Shop.

There is something for everyone this winter.  Winter Programs run from January 4th through February 14th. At the Y you’ll find a variety of programs designed to nurture the potential of children and improve health and well-being through all stages of life.

Newton Holiday Craft Show

It happens every holiday season…“What can I get for Aunt Sarah? My next-door neighbor’s baby? My boss?” With 40 talented artisans displaying their one-of-a-kind treasures, you are sure to find something for the most discerning person on your shopping list at the Newton City Hall Holiday Craft Show on Saturday, December 5th, from 10am – 5pm. Admission is Free! As you wander the many hallways of Newton City Hall, you will discover stall upon stall of beautiful hand-crafted jewelry, hats and scarves, pottery, cards, glass works, ornaments, paintings, purses, delicious chocolates and cheeses and so much more that will help you solve your gift giving challenge this year.

Be sure to pick up a map when you arrive as the booths are tucked into every nook and cranny of the building and you don’t want to miss any! With ample free parking on the streets around City Hall; both east and west entrances will be open. Please bring a non-perishable food item for the Newton Food Pantries. Holiday Lighting Ceremony

After you have strolled through all the delightful artisan booths at the Holiday Craft Show, and crossed several names off your holiday shopping list, come back (or stay) for the annual Holiday Lighting Ceremony at 5:00 pm. Join in the Community Sing-along with the Stacey Peasley Band to get into the Holiday mood, and enjoy free hot chocolate, tea (courtesy of David’s Tea of Chestnut Hill) and cookies as you watch Mayor Warren flip the switch that will turn the City Hall grounds into a twinkling winterland.
