Music for Food

The Conservatory at Highlands continues its community event series with
Departure Duo performing and discussing Music for Food, a musician-led initiative for local hunger relief. Donations and canned goods will be accepted at the door. All proceeds go to Centre Street Food Pantry.

Departure is a Boston-based soprano and double bass duo comprised of Nina Guo and Edward Kass. Committed to expanding the repertoire for the “high-low” partnership, Departure commissions and performs new works. Read more.

Newton Family & Friends Ski Trip – Bolton Valley March 3rd – 5th

Randy Friedman, father of two boys in the Newton schools and Director of Ski & Travel for an adult ski, sports, and social club here in Boston, invites you on a friends and family ski trip. If you are interested please see below.

Bolton Valley is set amidst 5,000 acres of Vermont’s most spectacular Green Mountain vistas with the highest base elevation of any Vermont ski resort. In addition to skiing and riding from its 3,150-foot summit, the recreational opportunities are as numerous as the views are spectacular. Whether your interest is skiing or snowboarding, telemark or Nordic, backcountry or night skiing or just a relaxing snowshoe in the woods, BV has it all in abundance. Bolton Valley offers 71 trails and glades for Alpine skiing and riding and 100km of Nordic and backcountry trails. Bolton Valley Ski Resort is the perfect location for the entire family.

* 2 night’s slopeside lodging at The Inn at Bolton Valley (standard room with 2 double beds) * There are a few rooms with 2 queen beds….first in, get them.

Adult non-skiers or pass holders may deduct $60 OFF trip price for no lift passes.
Child (7-17) non-skiers or pass holders deduct $50 OFF the trip price for no lift passes.

*Under 4 years old are free, but do not count toward occupancy. 4-6 years old ski free, so deduct $50 for no lift passes needed. COST:
*2 people to a room – $510 (1 adult, 1 child 7-17)
*3 people to a room – $660 (1 adult, 2 child 7-17)
*3 people to a room – $670 (2 adult, 1 child 7-17)
*4 people to a room – $820 (2 adult, 2 child 7-17)

Add $150 for child (7-17) over 4 people in a room
Add $160 for adult (17+) over 4 people in a room

Full payment is needed to secure spots. Space is on first come first serve basis and based on availability, or December 9th, whichever comes first. After December 9th on space available basis.

CANCELLATIONS: Cancellations before January 13, 2017 are fully refundable. After January 13th, there are NO REFUNDS! unless they can replace you with another family of equal number. Cancellations must be in writing.

Math and Science Tutor Helps Students Develop Test-Taking Skills

A tutor, experienced at helping students with high school and college level Math, Biology, and Chemistry, wants to help Newton students turn tests into occasions to show off! A National Merit Scholar, with 800’s in SAT Reading and Math, and a graduate of the #1 public high school in America, as ranked by US News and World Report, Peter knows how to turn the tables on test-makers by developing confidence in oneself as well as the material. High School Start Time Forum – October 19th at 7:00 pm

On Wednesday, October 19th, the district will host a community forum on potential changes to the high school start time. The forum is an opportunity for you to provide your feedback on the positive and negative impacts of a start time change. Several potential scenarios will be presented. Some change only the high school hours. Others change school hours at all schools. The working group’s year-end report can be found on the district website. Potential scenarios can be found here.
