“Newton Reads” events at Newton Free Library

Newton Reads: On the Same Page
Please join us this October for Newton Reads, started by teens, for the entire community! The goal of Newton Reads is to promote good mental health through community connection, shared information and discussion. Our Community-wide Read is The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider.

Wednesday, October 15, 7:00 pm, Newton Reads Ice Cream Kick-Off:
Please join us as we celebrate the kick-off of Newton Reads: On the Same Page! Enjoy ice cream generously donated by J.P. Licks, listen to music, and talk about the book! Open to all ages.

Saturday, October 18, 7:00 pm, Meet Author Robyn Schneider:
Please join us for a special author talk and signing by Newton Reads author, Robyn Schneider. Robyn will be flying in from California to discuss her book, The Beginning of Everything, followed by a Q&A and signing with books provided by New England Mobile Book Fair. Open to all ages. Please note, seating is limited and is provided on a first come, first served basis. Doors open at 6:15 pm.

Tuesday, October 21, 3:30 pm, Geocaching & Scavenger Hunt:
Ezra and Cassidy go geocaching in our Newton Reads book, The Beginning of Everything. There are many caches in our area. Join us to learn about geocaching, participate in a scavenger hunt and a search for local caches – including the Newton Free Library’s. Open to ages 10 and up. Thurs., October 23, 6:00 pm: Great Gatsby Movie Screening & 1920’s Era Costume Party: References are made to Fitzgerald’s classic novel, The Great Gatsby, throughout The Beginning of Everything. Join us for a special Newton Reads event where we’ll be screening the 2013 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio that runs 142 min. and is rated PG-13. All are invited to dress up in 1920’s garb or use one of our costume props in our photo-booth. Food will be provided. Open to ages 13 and up.

Monday, October 27, 7:00 pm: Success Under Stress:
Join Nanci Ginty Butler, LICSW, Assistant Director, School and Community Services at Riverside Community Care and Heather Byrns, LMHC – Clinical Supervisor MSPP (Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology) INTERFACE Referral Service for this discussion about how our perceptions of stress affect our health. We’ll also discuss the topic of stress in The Beginning of Everything. Open to teens and adults.

Thursday, October 30, 7:00 pm, Newton Reads Book Discussion:
Please join us for an intergenerational discussion of the Newton Reads book, The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider. Star athlete and prom king Ezra Faulkner’s life is irreparably transformed by a tragic accident and the arrival of eccentric new girl Cassidy Thorpe. We believe that community connection, shared information, and discussion are the keys to promoting good mental health. Join us in this cooperative dialogue to be led by Newton teens on the Youth Commission.

Free Toddler Program at Sunday School for Jewish Studies

The Sunday School for Jewish Studies (SSJS) is offering a free, 5 session toddler program for 2-3 year olds and their families.

The SSJS is a nonprofit Hebrew Sunday School for grades PreK – 7 at the Oak Hill Middle School in Newton.

Craft Fair, Oct. 19, at Boys & Girls Club

The Boys & Girls Club’s new teen program, Keystone, is holding a Craft Fair on Sunday, Oct.19, 2014, from 11 am to 3 pm. The fair will be held at the Boys & Girls Club, 675 Watertown Street.

Some crafts created by Club members include: coasters, dog toys, holiday ornaments, note cards featuring Club member’s art work, sun catchers, and jewelry.

The Teen Center has been busy not only crafting but planning for the bake sale table. Some of the foods available will include spoon truffles, cookies, s’mores bars, and ‘coffee spoons’.

Other tables will have henna tattoos, hair beading, ceramics, and feature vendors including: Yankee Candles, White Elephant, Tastefully Simple, Tupperware, Mary Kay, and Avon.

Public Hearing on Snow Removal Ordinance, 10/8

At their meeting Oct. 8, the Public Facilities and Public Safety and Transportation Committees will discuss a proposal to modify and make permanent the trial sidewalk snow and ice removal program. The meeting will be held at 7 PM in Room 209 of Newton City Hall. The meeting is open to the public.

Asian Cultural Festival, October 11, at Newton City Hall

The Asian Cultural Festival will be held on Saturday October 11, between noon and 5pm at Newton City Hall, 1000 Commonwealth Ave. So come early and spend the afternoon enjoying Asian culture!

12 – 2:30 pm: Asian communities and organizations with Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Southeast Asian heritage will present children’s activities and games, exhibitions and workshops for both children and adults.

Don’t miss the varieties of delicious Asian cuisines brought to you by local Asian restaurants starting from noon till they are sold out.

2:30 – 5pm Colorful cultural performances will take place to entertain everyone.

“The Phantom Tollbooth” at Watertown Children’s Theatre, Oct. 24-26

Tickets are on sale for the Watertown Children’s Theatre (WCT) production of “The Phantom Tollbooth,” which runs from October 24 – 26.

Learn TV at NewTV’s After-School Programs

NewTV is offering a free, 4-week course held at Newton elementary and middle schools during after- school hours. Students will learn how to put create a storyboard, write scripts, and use video cameras to create music videos and public service announcements. The finished products will be aired on NewTV’s Education Channel.

Angier Project Update & Waban Area Council Mtg, 10/9

There will be an Angier Project Update meeting on Thursday, October 9th at 7pm at the Waban Library Center.

These meetings will be held regularly on the second Thursday of each month for the duration of the project. The Waban Area Council will hold its monthly meeting immediately following at 7:30pm. Volunteer Leaf Rakers Needed (2 hours)

Volunteers are needed to rake leaves for Newton senior citizens in your neighborhood, beginning October 25 and running through November 23. This is one of Newton At Home’s volunteer opportunities for youth to engage with Newton seniors in their neighborhoods.
