Do you believe that all children have the right to be Safe, Strong and Free? Join this dynamic task force of trained volunteer CAP Prevention Specialists committed to teaching children in the Newton Elementary Schools the skills that they would need to stand up for themselves if faced with verbal, physical or sexual assault.
The CAP Program is now accepting applications for the 2016 – 2017 school year. The next multi-session training begins on October 15th. CORI and SORI screenings required.

Science Club for Girls is a nonprofit organization that increases confidence and literacy in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) for underrepresented girls by using experiential and hands-on learning in out-of-school time clubs by maximizing interactions with female mentor scientists. Science Club for Girls runs Kindergarten – 5th grade clubs and STEMinistas (6th-8th grade) clubs at Pine Manor College on Heath Street, Saturdays from 2:45 – 4:15 pm, beginning the end of September. To apply, please visit the website and click the appropriate program tab at the top!

Be ready for the upcoming Winter basketball season! Fall Session begins September 19th and runs through November 4th. Come join the Girls Developmental Skills and Drills program. There are also a couple of spots to fill on the 4th and 5th grade AAU Teams.
The Boston Emeralds Basketball Program is an all girls developmental basketball program that prepares girls for higher level basketball. Their primary focus is on the development of these young female athletes. The goal is to develop good basketball “habits” by teaching the fundamentals in a fun and encouraging manner, promoting a passion for the game while improving all-around basketball skills.

Plugged In provides a nurturing and supportive community to which young musicians feel a sense of belonging, an opportunity to express and be acknowledged for their musical interests and a chance to use their music to help others around the world. For all youth ages 6-19 who could benefit from participating in Plugged In, a unique nonprofit youth rock band program in Needham where young musicians of all levels and needs are welcome.

An Introduction to Think:Kids’ Collaborative Problem Solving Approach
Do you ever feel frustrated with your child? Find yourself shouting often and imposing punishments or rewards in reaction to challenging behavior? Do you wish you had a more effective parenting approach that also helps to build a better relationship between you and your child?
Think:Kids Collaborative Problem Solving approach, based in MGH’s Department of Psychiatry, provides parents with concrete tools to better understand and parent their kids in the face of day-to-day challenges – e.g., getting to school, homework, screen time, sibling relationships – and more serious challenges. It’s based on the understanding that many kids lack the skill, not the will, to behave well – specifically skills related to problem solving, flexibility and frustration tolerance.

Nurturing Minds invites you to hear from Security Mom – Juliette Kayyem, who will explain who a Security Mom is, how to talk to your kids about violence, if a smart home can be a safe home, and more! Juliette served as Homeland Security Advisor for Massachusetts and Assistant Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security. An author, Harvard faculty, and CNN national security analyst, she also is the Founder of Kayyem Solutions, a strategic security advising firm. Thanks to Juliette’s generosity, all proceeds go to support Nurturing Minds and the SEGA Girls School, an all-girls secondary boarding school providing education to over 200 vulnerable Tanzanian girls, many of whom are orphans and who would otherwise not get the chance to attend school.
