Local Cross-Country Ski Club

Do you want to introduce your kids to cross-country skiing and give them the opportunity to ski nearby with other kids their age? Eastern Mass Bill Koch (EMBK) Club is a local club dedicated to introducing kids to the joys of cross-country skiing and racing. The club is open to all children ages 7-13, from absolute beginners to experienced competitive skiers.

Kids train at the DCR’s Leo J. Martin Ski Track just across the Newton border in Weston. Children ski 1-3 days per week, depending on their experience from November until the last snow melts.

Soccer on the Mat

Soccer on the Mat ™, the innovative soccer/yoga program for girls ages 10 to 14 and created by Alison Foley, Head Women’s Soccer Coach at Boston College, is now registering for the winter session. This is a great program for the soccer off-season! Early bird discount ends October 15th.

Twelve week program on Wednesdays or Thursdays,  4:00 – 5:30 pm, $325.00 or save 20% with early bird discount – $259.00 if you register by October 15th.

If you want to preview the first class, please register and select the “preview first class” option for either November 7th or 8th. There is no pro-rating or early bird discount if you do preview the class.

Youth Hockey’s Learn to Skate (LTS) and Sprites/Learn to Play (LTP)

Registration is now open for Newton Youth Hockey’s Learn to Skate (LTS) and Sprites/Learn to Play (LTP) programs. These programs offer a great opportunity for your child to learn to ice skate and play hockey – as well as become involved in a team sport!

LTS consists of two 9 week Saturday sessions; Session 1 is November 10th – January 5th and Session 2 is January 12th – March 9th.  There is a discount when you register for both sessions.

Sprites/LTP will run from November 3rd – March 10th and this year includes scrimmages with the Watertown Youth Hockey Learn to Play Program.

Weekends with Newton families

What’s Happening at the Y

Registration is open for YBA-Youth Basketball Leagues
YBA League is a fun league for boys and girls ages 4-12 to learn and play basketball. The league runs on Saturdays, November 17th – February 9th and is separated into four age groups: Mini (ages 4-5), Biddy (ages 6-7), Rookie (ages 8-9) and Collegiate (ages 10-12). Kids Night Out
Parents, drop off your kids for a fun Friday night with the Y’s staff. There will be pizza for dinner and staff will keep the children entertained with games, swimming, movies and sports. $25 per child for Y members and $30 for the community. A 20% discount is offered per child for those with two or more children. Go out for the night and take advantage of this low-cost alternative to hiring a babysitter.

Poetry Night
Organized by Barbara Helfogtt-Hyett of Poemworks, the event begins with readings by two local poets. Then 10-12 guests participate in the Open Mic portion of evening to share their own written work. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit wsymca.org/events.

Family Fun Night
Bring the whole family to the Y for some family fun time. Featuring arts & crafts, bouncy house, games and more! FREE and open to all. Family Fun Nights are generously sponsored by the Belmont Savings Bank Foundation and occur on the second Tuesday of every month.

Community Flu Clinic (for ages 18+) – Tuesday,
Don’t let the flu tackle you! Get your seasonal flu shot at the West Suburban YMCA. This clinic is free and put on by staff from Newton-Wellesley Hospital. No appointment needed. The clinic will be in the Y’s Rec Center room on the basement level. Open to the community, must be age 18+.

Angino Fall Festival – Sunday,

The Y’s Preschool Center for Youth Development is licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care and provides a year-round, high quality early education experience for children 2.9 years to 5 years old. The program features a safe teacher-child ratio, a large, bright and open classroom with secure entrance, a weekly 30-minute swim lesson, and access to the Y’s outdoor playground, turf field and full gymnasium. Metrowest Travel Basketball registration is open

Join over 350 Newton youth basketball players in the Metrowest Basketball program. The program stresses basketball skills and sportsmanship in a fun, competitive environment.  Girls and boys in 4th-8th grades who live in Newton or attend Newton schools through the METCO program are eligible.

New players are welcome.  Volunteer coaches are needed.  Tryouts begin on October 15th and continue through October 24th.  Pre-registration is required.  Full details and on-line registration is available at www.newtonbball.com.
