Preschool Open House

The Pine Manor College Child Study Center invites you to an Open House.  For children ages 2.9 to 5 years, this NAEYC accredited program offers part time and full time enrollment options. They offer a high quality and rich curriculum in a warm, caring environment at their location just minutes off of Route 9 in Chestnut Hill.

Free badminton for kids in grades 6-12

Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:00 pm and Thursday evenings from 5:30-7:00 pm is free badminton for middle and high schoolers from October through June. Bring friends and join the fun! Program sponsored by the Newton Partnership and the Hyde Community Gym. For more information call: 617-999-4617.

Ligerbots Parents’ Night

Newton’s combined high school FIRST Robotics Team, the Ligerbots, will hold a meeting for parents. At the meeting students and coaches on the team will present what the team is, how the team functions, and how the year will progress. They especially invite parents of new team members, as well as parents who think their children might be interested in robotics, business, and design; parents of returning students are also encouraged to attend, meet the coaches, and learn more about the team’s plans for the upcoming year.

Newton Family Singers Turns FIVE!

For five years, the Newton Family Singers has brought together family, community and music to entertain and delight audiences in the Greater Boston area. For this special anniversary show, they have chosen their favorite numbers from past seasons by artists such as Pete Seeger, Cat Stevens, Carole King, The Eagles, Sweet Honey in the Rock and others from the American folk tradition. You’ll hear the most crowd-pleasing, and heartfelt songs that will get you clapping, singing, dancing in the aisles, and will remind you of the joy of community singing, and our powerful musical history. Newton South’s Empty Bowls Event

Ceramic Bowl Sale, Soup for Dinner, & Jazz at Newton South’s Empty Bowls Event:
Buy hand thrown ceramic bowls, and have soup for dinner at NSHS’ Empty Bowls Event. Over 200 bowls, crafted by NSHS ceramics students, will be sold to benefit the Centre Street Food Pantry.

Select one bowl or more, choose from a variety of soups (prepared by NSHS International Cuisine students), bring soup home for dinner, or enjoy it in the cafeteria while listening to the NSHS jazz ensemble. Take a night off from cooking, and help the NSHS community fight hunger one bowl at a time.

Empty Bowls will be followed by the Newton South Fall Music Concert.  Adults: $10.00, Students: $5.00. All proceeds benefit the Centre Street Food Pantry.

Newton Reads Book Discussion
October 30th, 7:00 pm

Please join in an intergenerational discussion of the Newton Reads book, The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider. Star athlete and prom king Ezra Faulkner’s life is irreparably transformed by a tragic accident and the arrival of eccentric new girl Cassidy Thorpe. Community connection, shared information, and discussion are the keys to promoting good mental health. Join us in this cooperative dialogue to be led by Newton teens.

College Athletics Recruitment Process
November 3rd, 7:00 pm

Take control of the college athletic recruitment process. Learn about when to start looking at colleges, how to contact coaches and what to ask them, the recruitment process, and more. This session will be led by Kate Hurd, a former two-year softball captain at Colby College and member of the NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete team, and coach at Newton North High School and Kim Penney, a two-time Boston Globe and Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Coach of the Year, served as varsity girls’ basketball coach at Reading Memorial High School for fifteen years.

School Assignments: How Parents Can Help
November 5th, 7:00 pm

Learn how to avoid some common pitfalls when helping your kids with writing assignments. Professional writing tutor, Jane Hirschhorn will be demonstrating how to help in a way that is productive, respectful, and allows students ownership of their work.  Jane tutored writing at the Mount Ida College Writing Center. She holds a Master of Arts in Teaching from Tufts University. Her children attend Newton public schools.

QPR for Teens and Young Adults
November 6th, 4:00 to 6:00 pm

Our community has been affected by suicide. Newton Cares: Coalition for Suicide Prevention and Mental Health is working diligently to train as many people as possible in the suicide prevention technique called QPR – Question, Persuade, Refer. The more people who know how to act, the more lives may be saved. Please consider being trained.

Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) teaches ordinary citizens how to recognize a mental health emergency and how to get a person at risk the help they need. Participants will learn how to: Recognize the warning signs of suicide, offer hope, and get help & refer.

Teen Depression Workshop

Instead of eating all that Halloween candy, trade it in for awesome toys, books and art supplies at Green Planet Kids in Newton Highlands!

Children ages 2 – 12 are invited to bring in One Pound or more of fresh, packaged candy in exchange for a $5.00 Gift Card to Green Planet Kids! (One Gift Card per child. Child must be present, and accompanied by an adult). Candy will be sent to overseas military troops.
