Creativity, Moon Cycles and Self Expression Workshop, 3/28

Ever wonder what drives your creativity or how you could be more creative?  This workshop will teach you how you connect to creativity, where creativity and invention originate and how they unfold, and how you can effectively harness your creative impulses.  Author, teacher and Newton South parent Hilary Spector leads this informal and invaluable afternoon.

Publicity for Artists Workshop, March 4

Believe it or not, the media is interested in you and your artwork! But it’s up to you to get the timing right, notify the right editors, and offer the information and tools that editors want, when they need them.

New Art Center in Newton, 61 Washington Park, Newtonville

In this fun, interactive workshop, artists will learn what tools you need to launch a publicity campaign. We’ll discuss free and inexpensive tips for gaining online and print exposure, how to write news releases and an artist statement, photo requirements for the media and much more. Bring questions, as there will be time for class discussion.

“Commonwealth Conversations” with State Senators, March 2

The public is invited to join State Senator Cynthia Stone Creem (D-Newton) and other Senators on Monday, March 2, from 7:00-8:30pm at the Newton North High School cafeteria (located at 457 Walnut Street) for the latest stop on the MA Senate’s “Commonwealth Conversations” Tour.

Members of the public are invited to speak on an issue by signing up, and comments are limited to two minutes to give as many people as possible an opportunity to participate.

Senate President Stan Rosenberg (D- Amherst) and Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr (R- Gloucester) have tasked all Senate members with assembling regional days to highlight and showcase their districts and to bring the State House to local communities. They, along with Senator Creem and Metro-West colleagues (Senators Richard Ross, Michael Barrett, Eileen Donoghue, James Eldridge, and Karen Spilka) will be attending a full day of events with business and community leaders from Plainville to Lowell, ending with this public forum in Newton.

These tours allow Senators to hear directly from the public, learn more about the issues of other districts and better understand the needs of the Commonwealth. Every Senator is also attending events in other districts.

Acoustic Newton Coffeehouse, March 13

Chase away the winter blues and warm up with a romantic and festive evening of American and Irish traditional love songs in the folk tradition. Join hosts Barbara Cassidy and Eric Chasalow, and their special guests Monique Byrne and Andy Rogovin (Crowe’s Pasture)for a concert that will feature original songs written by both couples, as well as many familiar ones.

Don’t Miss: Global Educ. Leadership Fund Fundraiser

Since 2008, the Global Education Leadership Fund (GELF) has raised over $85,000 to send 71 of our low-income students abroad on one of Newton Public Schools’ many travel programs. Without this scholarship program, our faculty-led travel opportunities would not be open to students whose parents struggle to make ends meet in Newton and Boston.

The GELF fundraiser on Saturday, March 21, at Newton North, will feature:

  • 5 course gourmet tasting menu prepared by Chef Katya Salkever, including tropical shellfish ceviche, balsamic-braised short ribs, & more!
  • Live music by Newton South’s very own Katani Sumner and band
  • Fine wine & Sam Adams beer pairings. The beer will be carefully selected and donated by Jim Koch, co-founder of the Boston Beer Company, who will be present to explain the selections.
  • Live auction
  • Excellent company (150 of the coolest members of our community!)

Help a Neighbor with Spring Clean-up

Newton at Home helps seniors continue to live in their homes by providing volunteer help with errands, yard work, and household chores — for example, shifting storm windows and pulling down screens.

This is a great family activity — spend a couple of hours helping a neighbor. You’ll be glad you did!

Free Workshop for Girl Athletes, Parents, Coaches: March 12

Parents, coaches & teen girls can learn about sports safety, injury prevention, and training at GirlFest, a free workshop sponsored by Marathon Physical Therapy.
