Women and girls in STEM

Are you or your child interested in pursuing a job in STEM? Do you want to hear from strong women in the STEM community? Are you looking for a way to spend your Saturday night next week? You should check out Ligress Night!

Ligress Night will feature two speakers working with Silverside Detectors, a Somerville startup aimed at building nuclear detection devices. Sarah Haig is a co-founder and has worked around the world helping people start small businesses in places like Afghanistan and China. Ali Forsyth is the company’s VP of Engineering and has also worked to develop power systems for underwater drones.

Ligress Night will be held at L’Aroma Cafe, 15 Spencer Street, West Newton from 7:00 – 9:00 pm on September 26th. Ligress Night is hosted by the LigerBots, FIRST Robotics Team 2877 from Newton. For more information about Ligress Night or the LigerBots in general, email  info@ligerbots.com!

Family MLK Ski Trip

A local father of two Newton school students has formed a travel agency with the goal of creating community by planning ski and ride family trips. The first trip of this ski season will be held January 15th – 18th, 2016 in Bolton Valley, VT.

Trip Includes:
* 3 night’s slope side lodging at The Inn at Bolton Valley (standard room with 2 double beds)
* 3-day lift pass
* Daily breakfast buffet
* Saturday and Sunday night dinner buffet (pasta one night, pizza the other)

COST: $275 per person * (based on 4 to a room), $1100 for family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children 7+) in a standard room with 2 double beds *

*Under 4 years old are free, but do not count toward occupancy. 4-6 years old ski free, so deduct $80 for no lift passes needed. Non-skiers or pass holders may deduct $80 OFF trip price for no lift passes.

*2 people to a room – $690.
*3 people to a room – $895.
*4 people to a room – $1100
*5 people to a room – $1305
*6 people to a room – $1510

IMPORTANT NOTE: ……this is not a chaperoned trip, nor instructions. You must ski with your children or arrange proper care or instruction. Ski school and/or day care is available through Bolton Valley.

Masterclass with Beantown Jazz Artist Caili O’Doherty
The West Suburban YMCA’s Center for the Creative Arts is hosting an incredible artist, pianist, and educator, Caili O’Doherty (Berklee Global Jazz, Litchfield Jazz, Stanford Jazz Workshop) along with her quartet for a masterclass, titled “Using Language as a Tool for Composing and Improvising.”

Historic Newton Hayfest

Come celebrate the harvest season at the Homestead Hayfest, a hands-on family festival. The Hayfest celebrates 19th century family life and lets you try your hand at living the way families did 200 years ago. Activities focus on historic food and crafts, games, and leisure pastimes that show how families lived when the Jackson Homestead was built. Learn more about cider pressing, candle dipping, burlap sack races and butter making.

Nursery School Open House

Parents are invited to explore Bowen Cooperative Nursery School during a free Enrollment Open House on September 30th. The Open House will include an opportunity to meet the instructors and sample some of the fun and engaging activities offered by the school. No reservations are needed.

Applications will be accepted beginning October 1st at 7:00 am.

Bowen Cooperative Nursery School offers programs for kids ages 2.9 to 5 years old, including a Pre-K program for older 4’s and younger 5’s who will not be entering Kindergarten in the fall. It’s a small, warm, nurturing community of families. Founded in 1955, Bowen is one of the oldest, continuously running cooperative preschools in the country. The school’s low adult to child ratio ensures individualized attention and a supportive environment which encourages exploration, experimentation and discovery while supporting emergent literacy and math skills, science, music and art.
