Turkey trot on November 18th benefits the Newton Food Pantry

Online registration for the 4th annual Newton Turkey Trot closes on Monday, November 13th!

This event kicks off with a 1 mile kids’ fun run at 8:30 am followed by the 5K race at 9:00 am. See www.newtonturkeytrot.com for information and registration.  Not a runner? Join the fun as a volunteer! Details are in the volunteer section of the website.

New this year – bring a nonperishable food item to bib pick up and our partners at Whole Foods Market will donate too, doubling the donation to the Newton Food Pantry!

LigerBots Host FLL Regional Qualifying Tournament & Maker Fair

The LigerBots are hosting a FIRST LEGO League competition, the Newton Qualifier, on the theme of Hydro Dynamics. About 300 Massachusetts students in grades 4-8 will compete using LEGO robots they designed, built, and programmed to perform complex tasks. Alongside the competition there will be a maker fair with hands-on STEAM activities for all ages and opportunities to see, touch, and drive robots built by high school students! Bring your family and spend the day (free admission)!

Gather for Hope

Newton PATH is holding an event for people who have loved ones suffering from addiction called Gather for Hope. There will be stories of hope, effective strategies for self- care, local addiction recovery resources, and an optional training on how to administer Narcan (overdose reversal drug available to all without a prescription).

A Multi Cultural Festival – Celebrating World Traditions in the Heart of Newton

Come enjoy A Multi Cultural Festival. The uniqueness of this cultural festival is in its interactive quality, an inclusive and broad-minded global perspective sharing experiences of harmony, celebration, and unity within the wonder of diversity.

Every performance will either invite audience participation, whether it be in Italian Renaissance Commedia Dell’Arte scenarios, Tai Chi, or the crowd-pleasing Zumba; or have an instructional element in their performance, such as folk songs from the Caribbean or The American Chinese Art Society showcasing traditional Chinese dances.

In between acts, there will be spotlights on different booths representing different cultures and countries: Africa, Barbados, China, India, Venezuela and Peru. There will be short talks and interactive demonstrations: Calligraphy by Betty Chang and Yung-Chi-Sung, Maasai Beading traditions by Isaya Oleporuo of The Warriors organization, Origami, Makers and Meaning of Diwali craft traditions by Lakshmi Narayan Kadambi of Thinkfolk, and more surprises. All this and more sponsored by the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs.

And last, but not least of course, there is food! International tastes for sale from Indian, Chinese, Caribbean, Latin and Italian cuisines and Arts and Crafts for sale. Admission is free. Please contact the Mayor’s Office for Cultural Affairs for more information at 617-796-1540.

Volunteers needed

Volunteers needed for the upcoming A Multi Cultural Festival organized by the Mayor’s Office for Cultural Affairs. The uniqueness of this cultural festival is in its interactive quality, an inclusive and broad-minded global perspective sharing experiences of harmony, celebration, and unity within the wonder of diversity.

Last minute circumstances have left organizers short of volunteers to help with arts and crafts activities. Helpin out entails guidance with making small clay diyas that hold tealight candles, and instruction in simple origami pieces. High school-aged kids or parents who are willing to assist for an hour or two (or more) please contact Jeannie Smith at 617-796-1540.

Come to a benefit to support the Newton Music Ambassadors Scholarship Fund

Please join in a fun-filled evening in support of a great cause. Student ensembles from Newton North and South will provide live music. You’ll enjoy other entertainment including a raffle and silent auction. There will be light fare and a cash bar.

The benefit will raise funds for the Newton Music Ambassadors Scholarship Fund (MASF) which supports Newton high school student enrichment activities such as music travel & off-site performances, and private music lessons and summer music camps for students with limited means.

SUGAR AND SPICE: GINGERBREAD HISTORY – In early America, ginger was considered a sign of wealth because it had to be imported. Not until after Christmas
became a national holiday in 1870 did gingerbread become associated with American celebrations of Christmas. Chase down the story of the gingerbread man and his ancestors with Clara Silverstein of Historic Newton.

The talk is part of the Waterworks Museum’s Gingerbread Open House from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. View the magical display of gingerbread houses and creations of some of Greater Boston’s finest bakeries and caterers. Kids are welcome to try decorating a gingerbread cookie of their own. Visit the vendor hall and start (or finish!) your holiday shopping.

Etiquette Boot Camp

The Etiquette Boot Camp will prepare a child for the next family dinner, social gathering, or formal event. Participants will learn how to start and maintain conversations with adults and peers, how to introduce themselves, when to interrupt, and much more.

Do you know a child that is struggling with table manners? Participants will learn how to set the table, use their napkin, pass food, and use utensils the European and American way. The 4-hour program is interactive, thought-provoking and fun, and is specifically developed for two different age groups, 7-12 and 13-17, targeting the social challenges affecting today’s youth.
