Annual Holiday Gift Drive

The City of Newton Health and Human Services Dept. and The Village Bank are teaming up again for the annual Holiday Gift Drive. Please help by donating gifts for children ages newborn to 10 years:

  • New, unwrapped toys
  • Gift cards from local Newton merchants

Donations will be accepted from November 12th – December 10th. Your gift will benefit deserving Newton families this holiday season. You can drop off donations at the following Village Bank locations:

Auburndale – 307 Auburn Street
Newton Highlands – 56 Winchester Street
Newtonville – 332 Walnut Street
Nonantum – 411 Watertown Street
Waban –  89 Wyman Street

Wondering about weed? Myths, facts, and marijuana in Newton

Mayor Ruthanne Fuller will introduce local experts Kevin Hill, MD and Nicole Danforth, MD who will enlighten us with myths and facts about marijuana science, health risks and benefits, adolescents and the developing brain and adult recreational and medical marijuana use.

Dr. Kevin Hill is an addiction psychiatrist, cannabis researcher and author at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital. Dr. Nicole Danforth is a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Newton Wellesley Hospital. They’ll be joined by Elizabeth Booma, MD, to answer questions from the audience. Whether you’re an adult considering giving legal marijuana a try, a parent worried about preventing teen use, or just plain curious, this is the event for you! It’s free and open to the public.

We Still Live Here: Learning about the history and present-day experience of the Wampanoag Nation

“We Still Live Here: Learning about the history and present-day experience of the Wampanoag Nation” is an opportunity to gain knowledge as well as guidance about talking with your children about how Native Americans in the New England region have been treated and how they are reclaiming their language today. A tribe member will join  to answer questions. Children 8 and up are welcome to attend!

5th annual Newton Turkey Trot

Online registration for the 5th annual Newton Turkey Trot closes on November 12th! This event kicks off on November 17th (the Saturday before Thanksgiving) with a 1 mile kids’ fun run at 8:30 am followed by the 5K race at 9:00 am.  For information and to register, visit www.newtonturkeytrot.org

Not a runner? Join the fun as a volunteer! Details are in the volunteer section of the website. All proceeds from the race go to the Newton Food Pantry.

2nd Annual Turkey Bowl

The 2nd Annual Turkey Bowl will take place on November 17th! All teams are guaranteed at least 3 games of play. The cost for registration is only $40 per free agent, or $300 per team. Click here for the team registration page.

All players are placed into divisions by age groupings (6U, 8U, 10U, 12U, and 15U). Teams with free agents are also balanced according to age and year of experience. Each division has playoffs and a Turkey Bowl Champion with individual medals for each player from the winning team. All games are less than 1 hour. NFL Flag is the premier youth flag football league for both boys and girls. The program provides young players a fun and exciting opportunity to engage in non-contact action while learning lessons in teamwork. Rock Bands for Grades 4th and up! Performing with others is an essential element to any musical education. With a professional coach, students (ages 9 and up) will learn performance skills, improvisation, communication as a group, as well as practice techniques. All bands will participate in live performances throughout the year, including one in a professional venue.

BOOKER T. JONES IN CONCERT

As the architect of one of the first racially integrated rock bands (Booker T. and the M.G.’s), Booker T. Jones set the cast for modern soul music. MUSEUM STORE SUNDAY / MEET THE MAKERS

Get a head start on your holiday shopping when the shops at the Jackson Homestead and the Durant-Kenrick House offer a 25 percent discount on museum store merchandise. Also Meet the Makers! Artists from Newton will show and sell their work from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm (1:00 – 3:00 pm authors including Barbara Berenson, Ken Bresler, Beryl Gilfix and Lenna Kutner will be stationed in each museum and you can purchase directly from them.

The shop selection includes posters and maps of Newton, Historic Newton’s custom-made ginger-pear jam, books about the Underground Railroad and abolition, interactive toys, and hand-made candles. Each purchase supports the mission and programs of Historic Newton. Museum Store Sunday takes place at 700 museum stores around the world.

STORYTIME – THANKSGIVING

Come learn how Native people in Massachusetts grew their food. We will read a tale about the Three Sisters, the story behind growing corn, beans, and squash together.
