Apply for a spot in the 2016 Marathon

Understanding Our Differences  is very excited to announce that they have received through the City of Newton one official Boston Athletic Association Invitational Entry Application for the 120th Boston Marathon on April 18, 2016.

UOD invites runners who are seeking a bib number to apply for this spot, in order to run the Marathon and raise funds for Understanding Our Differences. In addition, they are also looking for runners who have already qualified for the Marathon to join this fundraising effort and share in their mission.

The Mindfulness Series @ the Library kicks off with a talk by George Mumford. Michael Jordan credits Mumford with transforming his on-court leadership of the Bulls and leading the team to six NBA championships. As a widely respected public speaker and coach, Mr. Mumford shares his personal story and teaching strategies in The Mindful Athlete: Secrets to Pure Performance. His proven techniques can transform the performance of anyone with a goal. A book signing will follow with books provided by New England Mobile Book Fair.

Celebrity All-Bach Concert will benefit Food Pantries

A Celebrity All-Bach Concert to benefit Newton’s four food pantries will be held on Monday evening, December 21st. Music for Food is proud to partner with the Mayor’s Office for Cultural Affairs office and Newton Community Pride to present this exciting concert.

This concert unites outstanding musicians familiar to Boston-area audiences: Lucy Chapman (violin), Guy Fishman (cello), Kim Kashkashian (viola), Ian Watson (harpsichord), and James Winn (flute), along with friends joining in for part of the program as special guests. Curated by Lucy Chapman, this program will include the Trio Sonata from Bach’s Musical Offering, the G major viola da gamba sonata arranged for string trio, and Chapman’s own arrangement of the A minor solo violin sonata.

Music for Food is a musician-led initiative for local hunger relief that sets forth a model applicable in every community. Concerts raise resources and awareness in the fight against hunger, empowering all musicians who wish to use their artistry to further social justice. Ever wondered how the professionals make handmade pasta and cheese-filled ravioli? Come learn how they get that great filling inside a ravioli. Have you ever heard of lemon pasta, or black pepper noodles? We will knead and roll out our own pasta, and make homemade ravioli. Teens can take the ravioli home to cook and will be provided with a recipe for a delicious, easy, brown butter sage sauce. Grades 6-12. Register online.

Newton Mothers’ Forum Mothers’ Night Out!

Newton Mothers’ Forum is thrilled to announce the Keynote Speaker for the evening will be Dr. Jean Kilbourne, Author/Speaker/Filmmaker. Dr. Kilbourne is an internationally recognized expert on addictions, gender issues, and the media. She has been described as “a superstar lecturer” by The Boston Globe and has spoken at about half of all the colleges and universities in the U.S. and many conferences. Her first film, “Killing Us Softly: Advertising’s Image of Women” is among the most popular educational films of all time and is the topic of her presentation for NMF. She is also a well-known author, with titles such as “So Sexy So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids” and “Can’t Buy My Love: How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Feel.” In recognition of her important work, she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in October. She is also a Newton mom. You do not want to miss this event!

The Community Spotlight Speaker will be from The Second Step, a local nonprofit that helps survivors of domestic violence. Please remember that if you have signed up to donate a holiday gift to this organization, bring it with you to the meeting. You can also bring Star Market stickers for flatware to donate as well.

The food for the evening will be catered by New England Soup Factory with comfort food that is good for you. Vegetarian and gluten-free options will be available.

Community Messiah Sing

Join us to sing the Christmas section of Handel’s Messiah, and the Hallelujah Chorus! With Jeffrey Mills on the organ, Conductor Kyrah Rodriguez, plenty of scores and first-rate soloists – all that’s needed is a chorus of joyous voices!
