Talking to Your Child About Their Disabilities:A Panel Discussion

Dr. David Gotthelf, Coordinator for Therapeutic Services and Head School Psychologist, Dan Almeida, Coordinator for BCBA services and Miriam Kornitzer–Assistant principal for student services at Day Middle School, will lead a discussion of how to talk with your child about his or her disabilities. Topics will include the developmental readiness of kids to discuss and understand different issues, as well as parent communication of expectations and limit setting, sharing of feelings, and the use of resources such as therapists to help facilitate communication. The panel will be open to questions and shared experiences from parents.
January 14th at 7:30 pm in room 210 of the Education Center, 100 Walnut Street. Networking and light refreshments will begin at 7:15 pm.

“I think I’m getting smart!”

Become a Newton School Volunteer and hear these words from a student.

*Tutor a 2nd – 5th grade child in basic mathematics concepts once a week
for 30-45 minutes.
*Select your preferred school, grade, day, and time.
*Play special math games that reinforce skills and help students gain
confidence and competence.
*Training, Everyday Math books and learning materials, and ongoing support
are provided.
*No teaching experience is needed.

Philip Wolfson is a recently retired math teacher with 20 years of experience working with a broad range of students including those who feel stuck, are bored, simply want to improve, struggle with learning disabilities or for whom English is a second language.

His specialty is working with students from grades 5 thru 9. A few of their comments:

Newton Highlands Playground $240,000 design request ($2 million construction request anticipated).

WCT seeks Young Actors for Pirates of Penzance

The Watertown Children’s Theatre is still accepting registrations for its winter musical, Pirates of Penzance, now open to grades 4-9. Join WCT to sing, dance and act through this classic, comic operetta!

Get creative! Get crafty! Drop by the teen area (2nd floor) where we’ll be making holiday cards to send to those who are staying in the hospital this holiday season.

Knitting and Crochet Club
December 5 at 7:00pm

Are you an expert with knitting or crochet needles, just learning, or want to learn?  Join us the first Thursdays of every month.  We have crochet hooks and yarn and the know-how to teach the basics. You are welcome to bring your own project, share ideas and conversation. Refreshments will be served. Open to ages 10 and up.

 

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

Newton At Home (NAH) has had a fantastic turnout of volunteers for fall leaf raking for its members. School teams, church/synagogue groups, neighborhood families (moms, dads and kids) are busy these fall weekends all around Newton! The NAH members are so grateful to see this outpouring of help! More groups will be trooping out until all the member requests are filled.

Consider becoming a volunteer driver for Newton at Home – meet some interesting Seniors in our city – and ferry NAH members to appointments/shopping/events/Logan. Top Banana is offering a 6-week remediation course for students who need help forming their letters and/or numbers so they are neat, orderly, legible and spaced appropriately!
