Speech Team for Middle School Students

Students from all four Newton middle schools are invited to join the Middle School Speech Team.  Become a better public speaker; gain confidence for class discussions and dramatic presentations; win awards for yourself and your school; make friends with kids from all over the state; and have fun as part of an amazing team.

The team competes in tournaments through the Massachusetts Middle School Forensics League. Each student chooses her/his event: prose or poetry reading, original oratory, impromptu and more. Contests take place on Sundays about once per month.

Formerly open to Brown and Oak Hill students, this team is now open to students at Day and Bigelow Middle Schools, grades 6-8.

The team will meet on Mondays at Newton South High School from 3:30-5pm throughout the school year (last meeting 5/18). The cost is $445 for the year.

For more information, contact the team coach and teacher, Kim Vanaman. Register online here or by calling Newton Community Education at 617-559-6999 or visiting newtoncommunityed.org.
