February Vacation activities

The Newton Parks & Recreation Department is offering family activities over February Vacation:

  • There is a family trip to Disney On Ice – Frozen on Monday February 16th.
  • Family movies days are planned on Feb 18th and 19th at West Newton Cinema featuring Paddington and Dolphin Tale 2.
  • The department is also hosting the “Greatest Family Bingo Night Ever” event on February 18th at Post 440, 295 California Street. Players can win Boston Celtics tickets, Red Sox tickets, ski passes, restaurant gift certificates and more. Doors open at 6:00 pm and concessions include $1 a slice Sicilian pizza and $1 for a build your own Cabot’s sundae. Bingo will run from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm and includes 10 bingo games. Families and players can purchase 3 boards for $6.00 or 9 boards for $15.00. All proceeds benefit Newton Athletes Unlimited.

JCC Kid’s Choice February School Vacation Program

From sports and swimming to arts, dance, cooking and rock climbing, kids have their choice of activities at the JCC Kid’s Choice February Vacation Program.  For boys and girls entering grades K-6 (and CITs in grades 7-9 at a reduced rate).

Special highlights include JCC Magic Ark performance of Toying with Science, field trip to Wheelock Family Theatre to see Pinocchio and Purim Carnival.

Held at the Leventhal-Sidman JCC, 333 Nahanton Street, Newton.  Monday-Friday, February 16th – 20th from 9:00 am-4:00 pm. Come for one day or as many as you would like. Everyone welcome.

Girls Basketball Clinic at Newton North, Dec. 27

The Newton North Girls Varsity Basketball team is hosting a clinic for girls, grades 4-8, on Saturday, Dec. 27, 3:00-4:45PM.

Join the varsity players and coaches for drills, skills work, dribbling, and game play.

Cost: $20 per player (add a sibling for only $5)

Winter Vacation at Arsenal Center for the Arts

The Arsenal Center for the Arts is offering two programs during school vacation for children grades K-6:

Dec. 29 – 30: Children can find inspiration in the works of famous artists, then make their own masterpiece in The Great Artists (Grades K-6) class. Sign up for morning and/or afternoon classes as different projects are offered each time.

December 31: Try It! (Grades K – 6) is a fun, one-day workshop that gives kids a chance to try out a variety of media and learn new skills. Sign up for the morning and/or afternoon session as different projects are offered each time.

Children will be divided into groups by age. Ask about Supervised Lunchtime. Scholarships available.

Time: 8:30 am- 2:30 pm (extended day available)
Location: Alumni Stadium Bubble at Boston College
Cost: $295 (3 day option, 29th-31st, $225)

The goal is to challenge each camper to leave the clinics with an increased enthusiasm for the game and ideas to further develop them as individual players. Find more information on the BC Women’s Soccer website or email soccercl@bc.edu with questions!

Great Winter Programs

Newton Parks and Recreation has a lot of great winter programs for children and adults. Check out the Newton Parks and Rec website at http://www.newtonma.gov/gov/parks
for information about our upcoming winter programs for children and adults. Some programs include:

December Vacation Programs
– at the Lower Falls Community Center December 29th, 30th, 31st and January 2nd for children in grades K – 6. Participate in sports, arts and crafts, inside games, and more. Each day features a fun special event. 8:30 am – 3:30 pm with extended day options.

– Thundercat Sports December 26th, 29th, 30th and 31st for children ages 6 – 12. Play a variety of sports including basketball, floor hockey, soccer, dodgeball and more. 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.

– family movie day at the West Newton Cinema December 29th and 30th. Enjoy a movie, popcorn and drink all for one low price. Tickets are sold at the West Newton Cinema starting at 10:00 am with the movies starting at 11:00 am.

Newton South Recreation Complex
– located at the Newton South High School, this Recreation Complex offers a variety of activities for youth and adults on Sundays including tennis, badminton, sewing classes, engineering with lego, fencing, thundercat sports, archery, workout facilities, and more.

Ski and Snowboard Program at Nashoba Valley
– For grades 5 – 12. Learn to ski or snowboard with lessons at Nashoba Valley Ski area. Already know how to ski or snowboard? Join us for the lift ticket only option. Transportation to Nashoba Valley is provided from Newton. This program runs on Fridays from 5:45 pm – 10:15 pm.

Camp Fair
– See what Newton Parks and Recreation and Newton Public Schools have to offer your child in Newton for the summer of 2015. 12:00 – 4:00 pm at the Newton North High School in the cafeteria.
