PTO Committees and Volunteering

How you can help?

The Bigelow PTO is a all volunteer organization and we welcome participation from all.  Without the financial support and time contributed by Bigelow families, none of our activities would be possible.

Interested in getting involved ?  Following are our committees and contact people.

Bigelow PTO Committees

Communications/ Website: Post announcements and maintain the PTO website.  Currently the weekly newsletter is generated by using the information posted on the website to generate an email.  –  Carolyn Judge and Anush Sahakian

School Database/Directory: Maintain database and email list of Bigelow parents and students.  Prepare material for the creation and printing of the school directory which is compiled as soon as possible after the start of school in September. – Beth Coomber

Schoolkidz Representative: Getting school supplies is easy when you order the kit which contains the necessary items for each grade. Supplies will arrive at the beginning of the school year.  Work with teachers to arrange contents, promote SchoolKidz purchasing in June, and organize distribution to parents/students in August. – OPEN

8th Grade Activities / Fundraising: Help with Moving On ceremony and other transition activities for the outgoing 8th graders in June. – Jennifer Hrycyszyn and Debbie Rameriz

Boston Parent Representative: Liaisons to the Boston parent METCO population. – OPEN

Creative Arts & Sciences: Previews potential and existing curriculum enhancing programs with assistance of citywide coordinator. Schedules and finalizes contracts for all programs. Communicates to parents and students about programs presented via the school newsletter. – Laura Davis and Jen Weber

Teacher Appreciation: Help with the teacher appreciation breakfast in the fall and teacher appreciation lunch in the spring.  Also oversee the Buy-A-Book program to honor teachers.  –Stacy Schwartz and Magda Duchnowska

Community Outreach (Green Decade): Work with students and teachers identifying programs where students can make a difference. – Tami Ireland and Susan Donnellan

Newton Serves: Work with principal in determining what needs to be cleaned up in the school and on the grounds and organize people for those tasks. – Lex Van der Ploeg and Andrew Hargens 

Safe Routes to School:  Represents the Bigelow community on the city wide Save Routes to School Committee – OPEN

PoPS (Parents of Performing Students):  Mary Miller, Alicia Matos, and Sally Weylman

Mid-Year New Family Welcome Committee:  Jacquie Arbuckle and Open


Passive Fundraisers: Stop and Shop/Target. – Stacey Horsik

Bake Sale Coordinator: Recruit bakers and bake sale attendants for political elections. – OPEN

Soup and Supper Stroll: Chair our Fall fundraiser. – Carolyn Judge and Jessica Gilmartin

Bigelow’s Big Night: Chair our annual silent auction fundraiser and parent night. – Tammy McKenna and Beth Panella
