Instead of forming teams with set rosters and coaching staffs. NSELL conducts “Sandlot Baseball Nights” on two weeknights per week from the last week of June through the middle of August. The league provides shirts, hats, umpires, coaches and other game-related logistics. The objective is to give everyone a chance to have fun playing competitive baseball in a well organized environment.

The cost is $75 and limited to 75 participants on a first come, first serve basis. Please visit  the NSELL website for more details and to register.

The event will include lion dance, dragon dance, kung fu and tai chi demonstrations, and Chinese choreographed dance.

Helen Gee Chin was the administrator at CCMAA for 15 years and a proponent of preserving the history and promoting the practice of traditional Chinese martial arts. The Foundation is a tribute to her life’s passion. The Foundation awards college scholarships to encourage academic achievement and motivate individuals to become serious martial artists. Last year, the Foundation awarded more than $10,000 in scholarships.

Come join others from many faiths to share your hopes, wishes, and dreams for peace in our world and unity among our human family. Bring a poem, prayer or song to share or just come to listen and be with others who share a similar interest in peace and unity.

All ages are welcome. An art table will be available for anyone who wishes to draw or create something. Light healthy refreshments will be served at the close of the program.

Melanie Varandy will talk to our teens about depression. They will watch a video, and have a talk on depression, bullying, etc. What are the signs of depression, what to look for, who to call, and where to go.  Middle School & up

The three-week program, July 20 – August 16, allows students to experience Ceramics, 2-D Mixed Media or 3-D Mixed Media, Drawing and Painting, Visual Art Career Exploration, and Portfolio Preparation. Each week, students will select one class for the entire morning and two different classes for the afternoon.

The program takes place on Walnut Hill’s scenic 30-acre campus in Natick, utilizing the School’s wide range of visual art studios. Classes are taught by a diverse group of talented faculty from both organizations. Lunch is provided each day, and there will be opportunities for a daily swim in Walnut Hill’s outdoor pool (weather permitting). At the close of the three weeks, students will exhibit their artwork in a formal gallery exhibition and reception for family and friends.

Bring a plant – Take a plant at the 4th Annual Plant Swap on Saturday, May 18, from 11am – 2pm at 27 George Street (near Centre and Cabot intersection).

Use flower pots, milk cartons, coffee cans, yogurt tubs, even plastic bags to pot up your cast-offs. Labels would be nice. Early drop-offs are fine.

Exchanges are free, but please consider the donation box marked “Newton METCO Scholarship Fund.” An annual project started by a Bigelow Middle School student, now at NNHS, to benefit his METCO classmates through the best of ‘recycling’. Questions? Email Barbara Howard.

The 5th Annual Newton South High School Used Book Sale will be held again this year from May 21-23 in Wheeler Commons at Newton South. If you are doing a little spring cleaning, please consider donating your gently used books to the NSHS Book Sale. Proceeds will benefit literacy initiatives in the NSHS English Department. Please note that this year we are not accepting children’s books, travel guides, textbooks, parenting/pregnancy/health books, and material inappropriate for high school students. No book dealers at the sale, please.

Monday and Thursday mornings, April 29 thru May 16, from 7:15 – 8:15 am and 2:30 – 3:30 pm at the POD in NSHS parking lot (next to Goldrick House).

The festivities begin at 10am with the 5K Family Fun Run.
From 11am to 3pm, you can take in our exciting entertainment lineup, sample food selections, and view enticing vendor wares.

This year’s entertainment line-up will include the Newton North Jazz Ensemble, NNHS’s Rich Labedz’s professional group, and the Newton Family Singers.

This is the 9th Waban Village Day, it takes place in Waban Square on Woodward Street, right off of Beacon Street. This is a very popular event, fun for the whole family, with over 2000 people participating in rides, food and crafts. They are seeking donations of cat supplies (food, toys, kitty litter, etc.) and searching for foster and adoption homes for these cats.

Donations can be delivered to drop-off boxes located at Newtonville Pets and the lobby of Oak Hill Middle School until June 3.
