Bigelow Celebrates Walk-Bike-Bus to School Week and Collects Shoes for Kids in Need

In support of the environment and reducing traffic around our school, students are encouraged to walk, bike or take the bus to school (and home) as much as possible this coming week, October 1st through October 5th.  This is an effort happening across the city and the world.  In fact on Wednesday, millions of children from nearly 40 countries will be walking and biking to school in a show of support for keeping our communities safe for walking and biking.  Thank you to the children riding the bus as they are doing their part in reducing car traffic near schools.  Teachers will be surveying students this week to determine how many of our students walked/biked/bused to school.

A few safety reminders:

  • Walk on the sidewalks
  • Use crosswalks but make certain cars see you and yield to you before crossing
  • For those crossing Waverly – it is safest to go to the signaled crosswalks at Franklin/Waverly and Arlington/Waverly
  • Wear a helmet if you are biking/skateboarding/scootering, it makes good sense and it is the law
  • Check your helmet to make certain it fits (it shouldn’t move much on your head) and if it isn’t buckled it isn’t going to do you any good in a crash
  • If you bike/skateboard/scooter on the sidewalk, please be prepared to yield to pedestrians and be extra cautious by driveways and intersections

We are also collecting new and gently used shoes for children in need.  There will be a collection box outside the main office all week.  Now is a great time to go through your children’s shoe bins (shoes, boots, sneakers, rain boots – baby through adult).  Donations will be given to Cradles to Crayons.
