Body Mass Index Screening Notification for Grade 7 in November

Dear Parent/Guardian:

Massachusetts General Law requires that student’s height and weight be measured in grades, 1, 4, 7 and 10.  The results of the height and weight will be used to calculate Body Mass Index (BMI).  BMI is a screening tool that provides a guideline for determining whether a child is underweight, over weight, at risk of overweight or at a healthy weight.  The purpose of the screening is to identify possible health risks that might prevent students from obtaining the maximum benefit from their educational opportunities.

The growth screening will be done privately and with respect for each student.  Students will be asked to remove their shoes. Growth screening results will be kept confidential and sent home by mail.  The information will be recorded on the student’s health care record.

Bigelow Middle School will be measuring the height and weight of each child in grade 7 (and provide scoliosis screening to all children) beginning the end of November.

If you choose not to have your child participate in the Growth Screening Program, the school nurse must receive this request in writing.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the School Nurse, Sue Schy, at 617-559-6819.  My e-mail address is: Sue_schy@newton.k12.ma.us if you wish to opt out.

Thanks.
